Parker Estate, Coonawarra

19th June 2024

Background

John & Faye Parker established Parker Estate in 1985, planting the Abbey Vineyard with Reynell Selection Cabernet vines. These are original vines sourced from Bordeaux in the 1800’s, before they were lost to France forever due to phylloxera.

Over the journey of four decades of ‘winemaking without compromise’, Parker Estate has achieved numerous wine show medals, trophies and accolade, including the top Five Red Star rating by James Halliday.

History, Cool Climate and Sacred Geology

Considered the founder of Coonawarra as a wine-growing region, John Riddoch began planting Shiraz, Cabernet and Pinot Noir vines in 1891, based on the recommendation of his friend and renowned viticulturist Thomas Hardy, great-great-grandfather of Parker Estate Chief Winemaker Andrew Hardy.

One of Australia’s first and finest cool-climate wine growing regions, the maritime influence of the Southern Ocean exposes the district to even greater cooling due to the seasonal upwelling of dark blue water streams from Antarctica.

At 1492 Growing Degree Days (GDD) Coonawarra is slightly cooler than Bordeaux, and significantly more so than the Napa Valley and Margaret River regions. Above all, Coonawarra is know for it’s 27km long and 2km wide cigar-shaped outcrop of ancient Terra Rossa soils which rest over a hard limestone cap. Below this lies an aquifer which was once an ancient seabed. Today the combination of the aquifer, cool climate and free draining Terra Rossa soils make this unique location ideal for the highest standards of wine-growing.

First Growth

When John Parker released the inaugural 1988 of First Growth, people sat up and took notice.

Winning the Penfold Hyland Trophy in Perth, it was also judged the 6th highest rated Bordeaux-Style in the 1991 International Wine Challenge in London.

This release was the first step in establishing Parker Estate’s reputation for producing wines of outstanding quality and longevity.

In 2001, the purpose-built maturation facility and cellar door building was completed. Made strikingly from Mt Gambier limestone and steel girders, the temperature-controlled facility stands tall amongst the Abbey vineyard and reflects John Parker’s creative and uncompromising approach to grape growing and winemaking.

Over the course of nearly four decades, Parker Estate has achieved numerous wine show medals, trophies and accolades, including a Five Star rating by James Halliday.

In 2010, Parker’s ‘First Growth’ entered the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine as ‘Excellent’, enshrining the marque in the top tier of Australian wine.

Vickery, Clare Valley

19th June 2024

Founded to celebrate the iconic wines of the great John Vickery

Vickery Riesling produces wines that speak of place and purpose, helmed by accomplished winemaker Keeda Zilm. By focusing solely on Riesling, these wines showcase John’s unparalleled experience and Keeda’s mastery of the noblest of white wine varieties.

At the heart of Vickery Riesling lies a deep appreciation for our strong growing community in Watervale and Eden Valley. This community, consisting of friends and long-time contemporaries of John, plays an indispensable role year after year. Their unwavering commitment to quality in the vineyard ensures the production of consistently high-quality wines that not only reflect John’s legacy but also contribute to the ongoing story of Vickery Riesling.

The Vickery label is in effect, a time capsule for John’s wealth of winemaking knowledge. It allows his experience and winemaking techniques to be used without compromise and then passed on to current and future generations of Riesling winemakers.

Miss Zilm, Clare Valley

19th June 2024

After spending almost two decades in her winemaking home of the Clare Valley, Keeda Zilm took the plunge and established her own label, Miss Zilm. Committed to capturing the essence of the Clare, Keeda crafts wines that are true to site and celebrate the hard working growers with whom she shares strong friendships, and a passion for purity and place. This small selection of Keeda’s favourite varieties are all about making small batch, minimal intervention wines full of flavour and personality.

Chill, and enjoy with good friends.

Keeda Zilm grew up in Kingston, 250km south-east of Adelaide and whilst winemaking wasn’t her first consideration, she always had a passion for agriculture which ultimately led to her foray into the industry. Whilst undertaking her Oenology degree at The University of Adelaide, Keeda began working at O’Leary Walker Wines in the Clare Valley and it was from here that her relationship with the region began. In October 2018, after an incredible 16 years at O’Leary Walker, Keeda took charge of the winemaking at Vickery Wines and began working alongside industry icon and renowned “old master of Australian Riesling” John Vickery.

After spending nearly two decades winemaking in the Clare Valley, which Keeda affectionately refers to as her “winemaking home”, she finally took the plunge and established her own label. Keeda’s ethos is simple; Miss Zilm wines are about purity and place. Boutique in size and nature, she is dedicated to capturing the essence of the Clare Valley and its sub-regions, crafting wines that are “true to site” and celebrate the hard work of her dedicated growers. The focus is on what the region does best whilst embracing minimal intervention viticulture and implementing organic, sustainable winemaking practices.

Hesketh, Limestone Coast

2nd December 2020

Background

The Hesketh Wine Company is a small, family owned producer of high quality, yet accessible wines. We work with our own growers and process our own wines like traditional wineries. But rather than attempt to be all things to all people from one region, our approach is to remain focused on the individual strengths of different South Australian growing regions.

Specific vineyards – Each wine is either made from a single vineyard or sourced from a small selection of specific vineyards in each region. Fruit comes from both our own vineyards in Coonawarra and the Barossa Valley, as well as from specialised local growers.

Winery – Hesketh wines are made at our facility in the Barossa Valley by our winemakers Keeda Zilm, Andrew Hardy and James Lienert.

House style – Wines are made to a ‘Hesketh’ style, which is based on balance and complexity but more importantly, ‘drinkability’. Wines with generous flavours and aromatics, which also retain a sense of place – wines which reflect the vineyards they are grown in.
